All are excellent for adding distinctive flavor to meat, and fish dishes, gravies, soups, salads and vegetables. They are fun to grow and make an attractive garden addition! Eucalyptus is an enormous and fascinating genus. It comprises over 700 species, and accounts for more than two-thirds of Australia's vegetation. It is unfortunate that they are frequently regarded as not being reliably hardy outside of the subtropics, because it discourages people from planting them in cooler areas. There are many reasons to plant a eucalyptus--to begin with, they help to control aphids and other insects, most of them will grow rapidly, even in poor soil (12' per year is not out of the question), and most of them are very attractive--eucalyptus have a beauty all their own. And eucalyptus foliage, which shows incredible variety, is excellent for cut foliage in floral arrangements. Unless it is to be grown as a pot plant for its entire life (more on that below), a eucalyptus seedling must be planted as soon as possible, before too many roots reach the edges and bottom of its pot. Eucalyptus ought to be planted when they are no more than 8 - 14 inches in height. This tree is a native of Australia, but nowadays it is popular in European and American ornamental gardens. The foliage has an attractive silvery-bluish colour and a fine, aromatic fragrance which keeps gnats at bay. Growth is extremely rapid. Culture: Sun or part shade. Hardy in zones 7-10. Can also be grown as a patio plant, outdoors in the summer, indoors in the winter. Uses: Ornamental plantings, hedges or windbreaks, shade trees, firewood, cut flowers, foliage and fruits, frost-resistant plant. Definitely one you should have!

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) - Liquorice, or licorice and it is most commonly spelled, is the root of Glycyrrhiza Glabra from which a somewhat sweet flavor can be extracted. The licorice plant is a legume (related to beans and peas) that is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not related to anise, star anise, or fennel, which are the sources of similar-tasting flavoring compounds. Licorice grows best in deep valleys, well-drained soils, with full sun, and is harvested in the autumn, two to three years after planting. Today, liquorice extract is produced by boiling liquorice root and subsequently evaporating most of the water. Licorice extract is traded both in solid and syrup form. Some people also feel that the licorice herb has medicinal benefits. Acts like an annual, and is even known to self-seed in temperate climate, which is quite unusual for basil. Highly aromatic plant of the Ayurvedic tradition. Adaptogenic, immune enhancing, antifungal and antibacterial. Eat one fresh leaf daily, or pick the leaves and flowers and dry them and make the tea. Most excellent! Kapoor is easiest of all tulsi types to grow in temperate gardens and is highly aromatic. Most Americans I know grow this type and think it is the only kind. Kapoor has been grown in the US for about 30 years. It has been grown in India since ancient times. CULTIVATION ADVICE: If conditions are cool, the soil is not particularly fertile, if the plant is sown too early in the spring, and/or the plant is not getting enough light, it will run very quickly to flower. This is one of the characteristics of "kapoor." To grow large, full, vibrant plants, start by sowing the seed directly in the garden, late in the spring, when the soil has truly warmed up. Or start early in pots, but give plenty of compost, light, and a large pot. Sow by sprinkling seed generously on surface of potting soil in pots or by seeding directly in the garden. Once the seedlings attain their second set of true leaves, thin or transplant to 1 foot apart. If the central leader runs right up to flower, pinch it back to encourage bushy growth.If you live in the temperate north, grow as an annual or bring indoors for the winter. Plant prefers full sun and will survive roadside conditions although regular watering and softer soils are certainly appreciated.
