Review & Description

Sweet Woodruff (Asperula Odorata or Galium Odoratum) - Sweet woodruff herb plants have whorled leaves and small vanilla-scented white flowers in spring. Many people use sweet woodruff as a ground cover due to its low growing nature and spreading habit. Sweet burdock, meaning the whole plant, when dried has the smell of spring grass. The leaves and flower stems are used from this perennial herb which is grown from herb seeds. Sweet Woodruff prefers a semi-shady spot that's protected from the sun during the hottest part of the day. Shallow rooted and preferring rich, porous soil, it is a good choice near trees, or in problem areas where there are tree roots or other obstructions, like rocks, close to the soil surface. It likes moist conditions, and given enough water will grow to a nice low height of about 8 inches. If it starts to wilt, provide mulch and additional water. Unfortunately, for the indoor herb gardener, sweet woodruff is not well suited for growing indoors. Sweet woodruff herb plants are natural insect repellents. Many people plant woodruff around roses and peonies if kept away from their stems. It is also effective indoors when dried and placed under carpets, in pet bedding, and in your linen closet. Sweet woodruff works as an inexpensive fixative and fragrance enhancer in potpourri. It is also reputed to help heal minor wounds, and makes a refreshing tea that can sooth an upset stomach, used to treat migraines, nervous conditions, and other ailments; however, these medical claims need further research.

Review & Description

Like Asian ginseng, American ginseng is a light tan, gnarled root that often looks like a human body with stringy shoots for arms and legs. It was used traditionally by Native Americans as a stimulant and to treat headaches, fever, indigestion, and infertility. Ginseng is sometimes called an "adaptogen," an herb that helps the body deal with various kinds of stress, although there is no scientific evidence of adaptogens. But ginseng has been studied for several conditions, and it remains one of the most popular herbs in the United States.

Review & Description

Ginseng grows naturally in the Eastern half of the United States. Basically along and east of the Mississippi river. In southern range it is limited due to cold required to break dormancy. Ginseng cannot be grown in direct sunlight. 70% to 80% shade is ideal. In selecting a site, a natural woods works very nice, but must have at least a slight slope to avoid sitting water. Best to plant at the top of a hill or on the side of a hill and not at the low end of the hill. A woods with a mix of different types of trees is ideal. The plants can also be grown right in your own yard, but it must be a shady location. Rich, well drained soil on a slight slope is ideal. Ginseng is known to grow in a variety of soils. If other plants grow well, Ginseng will too. Ginseng likes moisture, but hates wetness. A low line area may cause root rot.

by Everwilde Farms Inc.

Buy new: $2.75

Review & Description

The generic name of this wild licorice comes from the Greek 'glycys,' meaning sweet, and 'rhiza,' meaning root. Indeed, the roots are sweet, and can be eaten raw or cooked. When roasted, they are said to taste like sweet potatoes. While this species is not the one used in traditional North American licorice candies, it is highly valued for it's many herbal propensities. Heavily used by a number of native North American Indians, it's been known to speed along delivery of the placenta after childbirth, aid in the healing of coughs, diarrhea, chest pains, fevers in children, stomach aches, and many other things. Early settlers used it to flavor medicine, candy, root beer, and chewing tobacco. Today, it is commonly used in natural cough lozenges, and by singers. This native wild plant bears clusters of yellowish-white flowers, and blooms from May through August.

Buy new: $8.99

Review & Description

Purslane (Portulaca Oleracea Sativa) - Purslane is a succulent, sprawling, annual herb plant that you can see growing in lawns and meadows. Purslane is an upright herb with juicy, succulent oval leaves and mild sweet-sour flavor. Plants will re-grow after cutting. Purslane leaves and stems are great raw in salads. You can steam them or add them to soups, stews, and other vegetable dishes. The leaves of purslane resemble small wedges and, like the stem, are juicy. The tiny black purslane herb seeds are hardly larger than grains of salt. If you look very carefully at the end of summer, you may be able to find them pouring out of tiny capsules smaller than a filling in a tooth. Purslane just happens to contain alpha-linolenic acid, one of the highly sought-after Omega-3 fatty acids. Why pay money for fish oil when you can grow your own Omega-3 fatty acids as part of your edible landscaping? Especially when it takes little effort to grow purslane, since it does grow like a weed. Purslane herbs are also very high in Vitamin C.

Review & Description

Stinging Nettle (Urtica Dioica) - If you have come in to contact with this herb out in the woods, you won't forget the stinging nettle. This herb plant is covered with small hairs that release a painful, stinging chemical when they come into contact with skin. Fortunately, drying or cooking removes the stinging effect of the leaves. Stinging nettle is used in salt-reduced diets and the young shoots are rich in iron. For the best flavor and nutritional content, pick the top 4 to 5 inches of new nettle growth in the spring, before the plants flower. Stinging nettle also has many medicinal properties. Because of its many nutrients, stinging nettle is traditionally used as a spring tonic. It is a slow-acting nutritive herb that gently cleanses the body of metabolic wastes. It is one of the safest alternatives, especially in the treatment of chronic disorders that require long-term treatment. It has a gentle, stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, enhancing the excretion of wastes through the kidneys.
