Skullcap Leaf dried herb - organic - .5 oz w/ display jar

Skullcap Leaf
Skullcap Leaf dried herb - organic - .5 oz w/ display jar
by Nature's Inventory

1 Used! | New! from $3.95

Herbs

Skullcap is the herb of a member of the mint family from rich woods and moist soils in eastern North America. Another commonly used species is Baikal skullcap, (S. baicalensis), the root of which is the Chinese drug huang-qin. It is found in sandy fields in northeast China and adjacent Russia and in the mountains of south west China. Traditional Use Also known as maddog skullcap, the American species was historically used to treat rabies. Traditionally it is known as a nerve tonic and sedative for relieving anxiety, neuralgia, and insomnia. Baikal skullcap was first mentioned in the middle class of drugs in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. In China it is found in prescriptions for fevers, colds, high blood pressure, hypertension, insomnia, headache, intestinal inflammation, vomiting of blood, and other conditions. Current Status Almost all recent research has been done on the Chinese S. baicalensis. Few studies have been done on American skullcap, but one of its compounds, scutellarin, has been shown to have mild sedative and antispasmodic properties. Baikal skullcap, the subject of numerous Chinese studies, inhibits bacteria and viruses, is diuretic, and lowers fevers and blood pressure; in China, it is used to treat hepatitis. One flavonoid found in the root, baicalin, has similar properties. Clinical studies in China show that a tincture of Baikal skullcap reduces high blood pressure. American skullcap is a good candidate for further research. Preparations Skullcap is available in dried form as teas, capsules, tablets, and tinctures. Care should be taken to buy skullcap from a reliable source to ensure the identity of the plant material.

Citronella Mosquito Plant - West Nile Virus - 6" Pot
by Hirts: Perennials; Sun
3.7 out of 5 stars(12)

Herbs

The Mosquito Plant is a genetically engineered geranium hybrid with a unique characteristic: it repels mosquitoes! It is easily grown as a potted patio plant, and easily enjoyed for its attractive foliage and sweet lemony scent, as well as for its mosquito repelling powers. It produces a leafy, attractive, foot-tall plant during its first season. Citronella is the substance in citronella candles, which have long been used to deter mosquitoes. It doesn't harm them, but they don't like citronella and avoid it. It is most effective as a repellent if you crush a few leaves and rub them on your skin. Like most geraniums, the Mosquito Plant is normally potted and grown outdoors during the warm season(after last and before first frosts). During the colder seasons the plants can be wintered-over indoors.

Hawthorn Berries 3 oz dried herb - organic - w/ display jar

Hawthorn Berries
Hawthorn Berries 3 oz dried herb - organic - w/ display jar
by Nature's Inventory

1 Used! | New! from $3.95

Herbs

Hawthorn berries are antispasmodic, cardiac, diuretic, sedative, tonic and vasodilator. Like hawthorn leaves and flowers, hawthorn berries have a hypotensive effect as well as acting as a direct and mild heart tonic. The traditional use of hawthorn berries is the treatment of weak heart combined with high blood pressure. The berries are also used to treat a heart muscle weakened by age, for inflammation of the heart muscle, for arteriosclerosis, and for nervous heart. The effect of hawthorn berry on these heart conditions is not immediate; it may be necessary to take the herb for 4 to 6 weeks to see results. Leaf and flower preparations may work faster, but hawthorn berries are better for some specific problems. A specific use for hawthorn berries is the treatment of orthostatic hypotension, a sudden loss of blood pressure caused by moving from a seated position to a standing position. Orthostatic hypotension can cause temporary loss of consciousness, and is a common complication during the first few weeks of medical treatment of high blood pressure with beta-blockers. A tincture made from a combination of hawthorn berries and camphor will not eliminate orthostatic hypotension, but it will reduce it enough that it does not cause swooning or fainting. Another often-overlooked use of hawthorn berries - this time as a tea - is treatment irritable bowel syndrome. Making a cup of tea with no more than a half-teaspoon of crushed, dried berries can relieve the constipation and gas associated with the condition. Kampo (Japanese herbal) medicine often uses crushed hawthorn berries with other herbs to treat colitis diarrhea caused by Crohn's disease, and various conditions causing rectal bleeding.

500 Seeds, Calendula "Mixed" (Calendula officinalis) Seeds by Seed Needs

500 Seeds
500 Seeds, Calendula "Mixed" (Calendula officinalis) Seeds by Seed Needs
by Seed Needs: Flowers

New!: $2.15

Herbs

Calendula is an annual or short-lived herbaceous perennial growing from 1 to 3 feet tall. Calendula makes flowers of orange or yellow, with single rows of petals or "doubles" which some say glow like the sun. Wild calendula is easy to grow from wildflower seed, and makes good color in a meadow setting. Often reblooms late in fall and is somewhat frost-tolerant. Calendula grows quickly, blooms heavily, and then dies with the first heavy frost. It will grow in all regions of North America. Calendula likes a shallow covering for good wild flower seed germination. - Calendula contains high amounts of flavonoids which are plant-based antioxidants that protect the body against cell-damaging free radicals. Researchers are not sure what active ingredients in calendula are responsible for its healing properties, but it appears to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. This allows calendula to be used externally for its antiseptic and healing properties in treating skin infections, cuts, punctures, scrapes, burns and chapped or chafed skin or lips. The tea or the tincture in water can be swished and swallowed in order to help heal oral lesions, sore throat, or gastric ulcer. Calendula has a good history of external use in the treatment of varicose veins. The fresh flowers are masticated, reduced to a paste with water in a blender, or rubbed directly onto affected areas. The dried flowers are best made into an aromatic infused oil, tea, or tincture. This makes calendula one of the more unusual wild flower seeds we offer.

  • Quality Calendula seeds packaged by "Seed Needs"
