Review & Description

Glycyrrhiza glabra is commonly known as Spanish Licorice. It is native to southern Europe and is grown specifically in Greece, Italy and France. This perennial is a legume related to beans and peas. It is not related to anise or fennel which also produce a similar tasting extract. The plant reaches 4 feet tall and has lovely foliage and flower spikes with lavender colored blooms followed by pods. After 3 years of growth, the roots are harvested to produce the Licorice extract. This herb is also known to have many medicinal uses as well. To improve germination, nick the seed with a knife and soak the seed overnight in tap water. Start the seed indoors 8 - 10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Press the seed into soil, cover it with ¼ inch of soil and keep the seed moist. With a temperature range of 65 - 70F, germination is usually within 45 days. Transplant the young plant outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Licorice prefers a position in full sun and rich soil. Space the plant 24 - 36 inches apart.
