Review & Description

Tetragonolobus pupureus, commonly called Asparagus Pea or Winged Pea, is an herbaceous annual legume. It's a very lovely vegetable! It is native to southern Europe around the Mediterranean, and it grows in the wild. It reaches 20 inches in height and 24 inches in width, and it has crimson colored flowers that are formed in pairs. The pods that come afterwards are winged and grow 3 - 4 inches long, and they can be prepared in a variety of ways: boiled, sautéed, steamed, deep fried or pickled. The flowers are edible as well and can be used as a garnish. In the spring, start the seed directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Press the seed into the soil, cover with ¼ inch of soil, and keep it moist. With a temperature range of 65 - 75F, germination is normally within 21 days. Space the seeds 4 inches apart and the rows 18 inches apart.
