Review & Description

As an overwintering annual, the best way to grow milk thistle for seed production is to sow it directly in the garden in the summer. The first flush of germination is about 30%, which is fairly typical for a wild plant seed that contains plenty of inhibitors. Over the next year or two, the majority of the seeds will eventually germinate, which you may or may not notice. Anyhow these first plants will develop strong rosettes, which then overwinter and go to flower the following spring, producing the thorny capitula filled with liver-protective seeds by midsummer. Leave plenty of room for these plants to grow--a good one can easily be 4 feet across and up to 6 feet or so tall. You harvest the capitula as the purple flower dies back to reveal the white pappus, and you can further dry them (after ripen) by putting them in a bushel basket or some such affair and stirring them daily with a stick (not by hand, please!) to afford even drying. After that, you pass them through a chipper and then you winnow out the seed. I use milk thistle seed, about a tablespoon a day, ground up in a little electric coffee grinder, as a valuable nutrient and hepatoprotective agent(Hepatoprotection or antihepatotoxicity is the ability to prevent damage to the liver.) Not for sale to Washington state (due to that state's listing of this valuable medicinal plant on their "noxious weeds" list.)
