Review & Description

Astragalus membranaceus, or just simply Astragalus, has been an important herb in Chinese medicine for centuries. It is used specifically in helping the immune system and in protecting the body against disease. The plant reaches 48 inches in height, and it produces yellow blooms in mid-summer. This perennial is in the legume family, and the roots are harvested when the plant is 4 years of age. Start the seed indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seed into soil; cover it with ¼ - ½ inch of soil and keep the seed moist. With a temperature of 70F, germination is usually in 30 days. Transplant the young plant outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Astragalus prefers a position in full sun to partial shade and sandy, dry, slightly alkaline soil. Space the plant 12 inches apart. Give the Astragalus plant winter protection the first year by mulching around the roots. The plants can be damaged by too much water.
