Review & Description
Vitex Angus-castus also known as Vitex, Chaste Tree, Chasteberry, Abraham's Balm or Monk's Pepper is an aromatic ornamental shrub related to verbena. The fragrant and abundant lilac colored blossoms of this beautiful bush are a butterfly haven, and the berries attract birds who like to feed on the berries which appear in late summer. The leaves, flowers, and berries of Vitex have a long history relating to the beneficial and medicinal properties of the plant. Vitex can grow between 10-20 feet high and is hardy to zone 7. (These seeds are reputably hardy to zone 5 and we are testing this claim in zone 5 for 2013 so we are unable to guarantee any zone lower than 7 as yet!) Vitex Angus-Castus is generally considered an easy plant to grow. It is drought tolerant and will thrive in poor soil as long as it is well-draining. Seeds require cold stratification (keeping refrigerated in a moist paper towel or moist sand) for three weeks prior to sowing. Sow seeds 1/2" deep in well-draining soil (drainage is essential with this species).Best growth will occur when soil is warm and evenly moist (not wet). Can be grown indoors in a sunny location or outside. When planting outside the plant should have a height of at least 1-2 feet to be able to endure its first winter. Vitex prefers full sun but can tolerate some partial shade. Trim back after frost if desired. Plant with confidence!
