Review & Description

Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) - Milk thistle is an annual or biennial herb plant grown from herb seeds. It is a very impressive ornamental herb plant with glossy, green-white marbled prickly foliage and large heads of sweet-scented rose-pink flowers. The stalks can be boiled for a vegetable, the leaves are used in salads, and the roots eaten like salsify. Not only is milk thistle used for the uses stated above, it has a long history of use as a folk remedy for liver and gallbladder disorders. The active constituent of milk thistle is thought to be silymarin, a flavonoid found in the seeds. Milk thistle may protect the liver against toxicity from acetaminophen (Tylenol), alcohol and other drugs. In Europe, milk thistle is reportedly administered to patients when they are given medications known to cause liver problems; however, further research is needed in this area to know safety and efficacy.
